On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden claimed that China has a “serious problem” with the Taliban and thus China to work out an agreement with the Taliban. The outfit recently seized control of Afghanistan and named its government.

Biden was replying to a question about how China funds the Taliban. When asked if he was concerned about China financing the group, which is prohibited under US law, Biden told reporters, “China has a legitimate grievance against the Taliban.

I’m sure China will try and work out an “agreement” with the Taliban. Pakistan, Russia, and Iran all fall into this category. They are all attempting to ascertain their next course of action. “

Biden’s remarks came a day after the Taliban formed a hardline interim government in Afghanistan led by Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund, with prominent Taliban members sharing key roles, including Sirajuddin Haqqani, a particularly designated global terrorist of the dreaded Haqqani Network, as interior minister.

Biden’s remarks may be taken in light of the recent discussions between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Afghan Taliban Political Commission Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.

The US, alongside its Group of Seven allied nations, agreed to coordinate their response with Washington restricting the Taliban’s access to Afghanistan’s reserves, the much of which held by the New York Federal Reserve, to ensure the Taliban live up to their commitments to respect women’s rights and international law.

However, experts agree that much of that economic leverage will be eroded if China, Russia, or other countries finance the Taliban.

Italy, the current president of the Group of Twenty larger economies—including China and Russia—has attempted to convene a virtual G20 conference on Afghanistan. Still, no date has been confirmed, implying disagreement within the group.

China was poised to recognize the Taliban as Afghanistan’s legitimate rulers before the fall of Kabul, US news outlets have learned.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar of the Afghan Taliban Political Commission to establish friendly relations with the organization just weeks before Afghanistan’s fall.

In a phone conversation with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Aug. 29, Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that the international community should interact with the Taliban and “positively guide” them.

China is yet to recognize the Taliban as Afghanistan’s new ruler. Still, Wang hosted Mullah Baradar in July, who has since been appointed deputy prime minister and has stated that the international community should guide and support the country as it transitions to a new government rather than increasing pressure on it.

Whether it’s about human rights violations or freedom of expression, the Taliban and China share a common platform, as the former is far more radical and conservative. At the same time, despite its long history of progress, the latter continues to treat its people as slaves, according to a media report.

The Taliban, which claims to be Islam’s flagbearer, kept its mouth shut on Uyghur repression in China at a meeting between the outfit’s senior leader and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, owing to the Taliban’s financial ties to Beijing.

According to DW, Beijing is expected to contribute gradually and keep an eye on the evolving situation in Afghanistan.

Chinese firms have already acquired drilling rights to oil resources. Apart from that, Afghanistan is home to rare mineral reserves used in smartphones, tablets, and LED displays.
